The group's sound was a blend of hip hop and electronic music influences from the likes of Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode. In 1989, The Avalanches were signed to Mushroom Records and released their self-titled debut album in 1991 to critical acclaim. After the release of their second album, Since I Left You, the band experienced a number of lineup changes that caused them to split up temporarily in 1995 due to financial issues with Mushroom Records.
In 1996, The Avalanches were signed by Modular Recordings and released their third studio album, Since Then in 1997 to critical acclaim.
